About

I mom, I garden, I travel, and I take a lot of pictures of flowers, sunsets, and my cats. Sometimes I write but, truly, I’m just trying to make the most out of each and every day.

Shyla Shehan was born in Iowa and has spent the majority of her life in the Midwest. She holds an MFA in Writing from the University of Nebraska where she leveled up her poetry game and discovered that the writing life has more to offer than just a way to cope with the chaos of the Universe.

Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Naugatuck River Review, Midwest Quarterly, Drunk Monkeys, The Decadent Review, GRIFFEL, Plainsongs, Gyroscope Review, and elsewhere. She’s received a number of accolades for her poetry including an Academy of American Poets Prize, a Pushcart nomination in 2022, and first place in the Nebraska Poetry Society Poetry Open. Her debut book, Unsuspecting Cinderella, is available from Finishing Line Press and on Amazon.

Shyla is Co-founder and Editor of The Good Life Review and currently lives in Omaha, Nebraska with her partner, children, and three cats. She spends most days tending to a healthy household and is currently planting flowers for color all summer and daydreaming about great escapes.

I have long believed in the transformative power of art–from my own early experiences with writing and creating to the present moment, as it has become vital to many in arduous and unwieldy times. It is through contemplation, expression, and human connection that we may better understand ourselves and the world around us, and find ways to cope, heal, and grow. Art is a wondrous means through which these can be achieved.
