I mom, I garden, I travel, and I take a lot of pictures of flowers, sunsets, and my cats. Sometimes I write but, truly, I’m just trying to make the most out of each and every day.

Shyla Shehan was born in Iowa and has spent the majority of her life in the Midwest. She holds an MFA in Writing from the University of Nebraska where she leveled up her poetry game and discovered that the writing life has more to offer than just a way to cope with the chaos of the Universe.

Her work has appeared in Kallisto Gaia Press Ocotillo Review, The Decadent Review, GRIFFEL, Plainsongs, Gyroscope Review, The Journal of Compressed Creative Arts by Matter Press, and elsewhere, and her poem “Double American Sonnet for Terrance Hayes” won first prize in the Nebraska Poetry Society contest in 2022. Her first book, Unsuspecting Cinderella, is available from Finishing Line Press and on Amazon.

Shyla is Co-founder and Editor of The Good Life Review and currently lives in Omaha, Nebraska with her husband, children, and four cats. She spends most days tending to a healthy household and is currently cultivating the largest golden pothos in captivity.

I have long believed in the transformative power of art. From my own early experiences to the present moment, writing and creating have helped me work through my thoughts and feelings and find peace. We live in a complicated time, when so many people are faced with challenging circumstances and need an outlet to try and make sense of it all. It is through contemplation, expression, and human connection that we may better understand ourselves and the world around us. Art is a wondrous means through which we can find ways to cope, heal, and grow.
